The AD20 is the next evolution in the AD10 design from Andrew Demko. Andrew is the creator of the Tri-Ad lock, which has been a cornerstone in Cold Steel's folding knives for years. This self-adjusting lockback mechanism features a stop pin that redistributes the load of vertical positive and negative pressures on the lock. The stop pin receives all positive pressure (pressure on the cutting edge) and transfers it into the handle frame and liners, where it can be more effectively absorbed. The Shark lock is a similar patented design where speed is not hindered in any way, and the knife opens and closes as fast as a frame lock on bearings. It also affords comparable lock strength to the Tri-Ad design, which sets the standard around the entire industry, and the Shark can also be used to launch the blade open with a bit of wrist action.
The AD20 is a rugged knife designed to tackle any task with ease. As for the AD20I, it represents the international variant of the AD20 model with the blade precision ground overseas, specifically in Italy. Per John, it really benefits from the meticulous finishing afforded by Italy's robust manufacturing processes, particularly in precision machine tools, and the finish is comparable if not slightly better. Besides the blade, though, everything else on this knife was made in the USA.
The clip point blade has a reinforced tip, sharpening choil, and excellent thumb ramp jimping. The Shark lock requires little manipulation in your hand to disengage; just pull back on the natural ramp and swing the blade closed. The ergonomic G10 handle has highly textured scales for grip and abbreviated titanium liners that are only large enough to house the locking mechanism. The stainless steel spring pocket clip is only set up for tip-up, right-hand carry, and you have dual thumb studs to use in a pinch or if lock-flicking isn't for you. It's a wonderful utility/tactical design that is strong enough to handle hard use and abuse with a flat grind for exceptional slicing capabilities.
